ATHENAEUM ~ Soul's Library
A deep love of precise learning must always be balanced by our determination to never take life or learning so seriously that we sacrifice the joy inherent in those two things.

My heart’s stern librarian
Visited today and
       in weighty, leaden tones
Spoke dourly of Responsibility
And the Serious Approach to Life,
"especially in one's Later Years."

She pointed prissily to a volume
I’d left down, spine asplay.
"Careless" she called me,
        and so I am.
I care less than I can say
About such somber,
        once-serious things.

"Slovenly, untidy shelves."
She hissed a silibant warning
     not to contradict,
Her head moving slowly,
     side to side,
In utter disappointment.

I nodded with a solemn mouth
To match her own,
Remembered from my former,
wearying bookroom days;
And, eyes dancing saucily,
      I goosed her.
