Açai

I certainly won't promise you that any acai nutrient blend (or acai alone) will perform for me as it has for you.  I can only share my story with you.  You might try either the dried powdered form or (my preference) the berry concentrate forms of acai to see if that natural antioxidant alone will work for you.  Adding acai in liquid form to my daily health protocol continues to be one of the best things I've ever done for my health, for anti-aging and to halt the damage caused in the body by inflammatory processes.  But I also include other antioxidants from a host of nutritious sources as well to ensure maximum wellness. Dr. Andrew Weil and other well known nutritionists and physicians commend the intake of rich dietary antioxidants, but question the cost of Mona Vie and some of the more expensive commercials brands >  >  >  >

Açai was called "the Viagra of the Amazon" in a segment aired on NBC's Today Show in 2004.  Other respected periodicals, including The Wall Street Journal, Men's Journal, Health Sciences Institute and The Washington Post have done investigative reports on the berry and its promise for optimal human health and treating disease.  The University of Florida reports the powerful antioxidants in the Açai berry kills cancer cells in the lab: http://news.ufl.edu/2006/01/12/berries/

I have lived with inflammatory disease all my life.  One of my earliest life memories is of my knees hot and achey and "fat" with swelling when I was around 3.  I was officially diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis when I was 11, by which time my knees were already very damaged and my hands and neck ached relentlessly.  The surgeries to help me walk began at age 13.

So what kinds of things are in the blends of Açai -- both beverages and edibles -- that so many are selling on the internet?  The Açai berry is there for sure, but each company adds its own "secret proprietary blend" of other nutritutional elements.  These are usually other whole fruits -- perhaps exotic ones like Noni or Mangosteen -- and often (for the taste benefit) things like White grape, Nashi pear, Acerola, Pear, Aronia, Grape, Cranberry, Passionfruit, Banana, Apricot, Prune, Kiwi, Blueberry, Bilberry, Wolfberry, Pomegranate, Lychee, and Camu berry. Sometimes, beneficial supplements like CELADRIN and GLUCOSAMINE  or AYURVEDIC COMPOUNDS are added to the fruits to give an "active" formulary boost to some of the many acai-based products you can purchase.  E-mail me and I'll send you a free research-based powerpoint about the value of some of these substances to general health, the development of healthy cartilage and collagen, and their effects on inflammation.

This is my story, not a promise of what can happen for you, just my personal anecdotal tale of physical benefit.
On February 3rd, 2006, I was given my first dose of an Açai-rich, pleasant tasting beverage -- and, YES!, I was very skeptical that I would derive any benefit from taking it!  BUT.......

On February 4th, the very next day, after only 2  2-ounce doses of the good-tasting blend, I woke with no swelling in my finger joints, all of the swelling gone from my left knee and most of it gone from my right.  I "forgot" to take my morning pain reliever -- I didn't need it!  Over the first week of taking the drink, that same thing happened four more times.

"But I don't have rheumatoid or any other kind of arthritis," you say.  Did you know that medical books list at least 84 different kinds of arthritis-related inflammatory diseases?  (Some docs say there may be as many as 107.)    Here's a list of more than
75 INFLAMMATORY DISEASES & DISORDERS
as set out in the Fibromyalgia Handbook and on dozens of rheumatological sites.

I wrote a note to several people who pray for me regularly about my health and general wellbeing sharing my personal astonishment at my body's response to the nutritional change I'd made.  I could tell they were all trying their hardest to be hopeful for me, but having seen me recovering from knee procedures, on morphine, white-faced with pain, using crutches -- well, I could hear the skepticism in their voices:  "We'll pray that this might be the answer you've been waiting for."

We never know when that bridge from
"NO HOPE" to "HOPE AT LAST"
is going to be built in our lives, do we?

On February 5th, 2006, I woke realizing I HAD SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT WITHOUT WAKING.  No big deal, you say.  Not so:  it has been so long I can't remember the last night I slept for 7+ hours without waking -- at least 12 or 13 years, I think.  The arthritis in my joints wakes me several times a night and I have to "rearrange" my legs and then go back to sleep.  As the rheumatoid factors have attacked my lungs, I also have had to get up two or three times a night to cough out this yucky stuff that builds up, use an inhaler and then try to get back to sleep.  NOT a way to spend a restful night.

Did you get that?  On February 5th of 2006, I woke from a full, unbroken, night-long sleep -- and this after taking only 4 2-ounce doses of this fruity, nutritious antioxidant powerhouse blend.  I decided to increase my dosage of the juice slightly:  3 ounces in the morning and 2 at night.

On day 10 of taking the juice, I realized I could stand up without pain even if I'd been sitting a long time -- no wobbling, no limping, no aching.  Friends who have watched me nervously as I've tried in the past to rise using crutches or tables or walls or them(!) for support have been as astonished as I am.

On the morning of day 14 of taking the juice, the first joint of my index finger on my right hand -- gnarled for more than two decades by rheumatoid arthritis -- had begun to straighten.  I can't explain it; I'm reporting the news I wake up to as a gift from God.  I continue to be amazed at the vigor that is replacing the old worn-out, in-pain feelings that have been a part of my waking experience for so long.

On day 17 of my Açai adventure, as I left a sandwich shop and completely without thinking, I stepped off a curb on my arthritis-ruined right leg.  As I realized what I was doing, I almost stopped mid-move fearing the old reaction of grinding, pain, stumbling, falling -- BUT as I continued the step down, I felt no pain, no grinding, no catching.  I did this whole thing JUST AS IF I HAD A NORMAL KNEE!  I haven't been able to step off a curb like a normal person in more than 5 1/2 years.  (I'm starting to feel sort of guilty about the handicapped hanger my doc insisted I place on my car some years ago!)

On day 21, I lifted a 20" television set -- old used-to-be arthritic fingers bent over the top to fit in the wells at the back of the set! -- and carried it from our small sitting room into our larger living room so I could play the DVD about discovering Açai for a roomful of friends who were coming over.  As I was halfway through carrying it into the living room, my daughter saw me doing it and nearly had a heart attack.  This morning -- Day 22 -- I got up and exercised on my cardio cruiser for the first time in months.  I can breathe easily, deeply, wonderfully, so I can go back to exercising now!  Who knows what these old legs of mine will be able to do once I can rebuild some strength in them now that my joints don't hurt?

I'm not having to do the self-talk of those who have chronic pain:  "You can do it -- put the right leg over the side of the bed.  Put your weight on the left leg and your hand on the dresser.  Stand up slowly -- the pain will be a little less once you get that first dose of medicine down. Breathe; breathe. Don't cough -- don't let it start, God, don't let it start -- I can't do the pain and the coughing, too."  If you're chronically ill, you have some version of this that goes on inside you as you fight to keep going.  You know what I mean.

I have a new self-talk starting inside my head now that reflects a growing feeling that there might be a brighter future ahead for me:  "What might I do -- even at 56 -- with a life in which pain and the disabilities of 4 'incurable' diseases and disorders are not the greatest limiting factors of my life?"  (I haven't been able to walk on a beach or take nature hikes to birdwatch in nearly 3 years -- my favorite things to do.  I haven't been able to walk up or down stairs in nearly 4 years.  What if I could try these things again in a few weeks?!?!!?)  See the new life goals page I'm beginning here  >  >  >

Are the scars on my legs still there?  Yup.  Has the cartilage lost to decades of advanced 4th stage arthritis magically reappeared?  I don't think so.  What has happened, I suspect, is that the antioxidants are wonderfully transporting toxins away from my joints and that healing at a cellular level of joints constantly wounded by normal use is beginning.  I've even experimented with days/weeks not taking a blend of acai and other antioxidant juices -- the days and weeks on are definitely less painful with less swelling and more range of motion than the days off these nutritional powerhouses.

Be sure to check back here for future reports of my progress.  I'll log the changes here periodically and add links and resources to share with you what I know about inflammatory disease from a lifetime of suffering and interacting with doctors about it and what I'm finding out about the life-changing Açai God has sent my way.  If you're sick or in chronic pain, the important thing is to keep on trying all the ways -- organic, natural, wholistic, and medicinal or surgical as necessary -- you can to keep on going.  Staying hopeful, keeping your spirits up and your attitude positive about finding daily solutions for improving your life are terrifically important.

If you want to order a bottle of an Amazonian wonder-juice to try for yourself, you'll have to find someone who sells it.  Don't get roped in to the MLM thing, though. The Utah-based MLM marketer of this product offers a binary payout system; hardly anyone wins with that.
The folks who started the M.V. company also were the big boys and girls who took a pretty bad fall with Amway some years ago.  Be cautious in all things financial during this hard economic time.  If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
